Nobel Prize for Literature

There are 5 Nobel Prizes, for Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Peace, and Literature.

The Nobel Committee for Literature looks at the nominations for the Literature prize.  They make a recommendation to the Swedish Academy who make the final decision.
The winner receives 10 million Krona, or NZ $1.9 million.  Wow!

Last year the Literature award was won by Mario Vargas Llosa, and no I haven't heard of him either!  Past winners include more familiar names like Doris Lessing, Harold Pinter and Toni Morrison.

The 2011 Nobel Prize for Literature is being awarded on Thursday 6 October.

  1. Mario Vargas Llosa wrote a really quirky book called "Aunt Julia & the Scriptwriter". It's writtenin the South American style, which means it wanders all over the place - but it's one of the best (strangest & funniest) books I have read. If Jodie Picoult is your favourite author, then this is probably not for you. There would be though a number of (strange and quirky) seniors at St Mary's College who would probably love it.
